(e) An officer who refuses to occupy Govern-
ment quarters when allotted to him forfeits his
claim to rent allowance or lodging allowance.
If Government quarters are not available, an
officer who rents a "tenement" with the permission of
Government receives as rent allowance the difference
between 6 per cent. or his salary and the sum of the rent and taxes payable in respect of the unfurnished tenement. For the purpose of this regulation the maximum rental inclusive of taxes which is recognised by the Government in the case of an officer whose salary does not exceed
£600 is $150 a month.
Ordinarily an unmarried officer will not be allowed a rent allowance as the sole tenant of a rented
tenement.
Only one rent allowance is payable in respect
of any tenement.
An officer who, with the permission of the Colonial Secretsry, does not reside in Government quarters or ina tenement in respect of which a rent allowance is payable receives a lodging allowance as follows :-
(a) If married, 15 per cent. of his salary
subject to a maximum of $100 a month.
(b) If unmarried, 7 per cent. of his salary
subject to a maximum of $50 a month.
An officer is provided with a free First Class passage on first appointment. If his agreement is not re- newed upon its expiration a return passage will be pro-
vided.
An officer will receive half-pay at £1 = $10 for the period of the voyage to Hong Kong and if his service is not continued after the expiration of his agreement he will receive half-pay (at current rate) for the period
of the voyage home.
